BIBLE READING

READER: A reading from the Book of Exodus (12:1-13).

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month will stand at the head of your calendar; you will reckon it the first month of the year. Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this month every family must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household. If a household is too small for a lamb, it, along with its nearest neighbor, will procure one, and apportion the lamb’s cost in proportion to the number of persons, according to what each household consumes. Your lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats. You will keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole community of Israel assembled, it will be slaughtered during the evening twilight. They will take some of its blood and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They will consume its meat that same night, eating it roasted with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or even boiled in water, but roasted, with its head and shanks and inner organs. You must not keep any of it beyond the morning; whatever is left over in the morning must be burned up.

This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you will eat it in a hurry. It is the LORD’s Passover. For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every firstborn in the land, human being and beast alike, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt – I, the LORD! But for you the blood will mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thereby, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you.

ALL: Praise be to the Lord, our God.

GOSPEL READING

SER: Let us stand and listen attentively to the Holy Gospel.

CEL: Peace (+) be with you.

ALL: With you and with your spirit.

CEL: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, proclaimed by St. Luke (19:1-9).

ALL: Glory to You Christ, Our Lord.

CEL: Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy.

When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house.”

ALL: Glory to You Christ, our Lord.

KAROZUTHA

ALL: Lord, please bless these family members.

ALL: Lord, please bless these family members.

SER: Let us pray, Peace be with us.

CEL: O Merciful Lord, who saved the families of the Israelites from danger during their captivity in Egypt, bless + this family. Since the family is the key element that works actively in your holy church, please protect it by giving a traditional blessing. Help these family members to fulfill your will in happiness, sorrow, wealth, and poverty. Shield the children and grant them the ability to be brought up in holiness. The Lord Almighty, Father + Son + Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen

PSALM

Give thanks unto the Lord: / Because He is good.

I prayed to the Lord during my tribulation / He happily replied.

Because the Lord is my helper / I will fear no one.

When the Lord helps / What can a man do to me?

How wonderful is dependence on God! / Rather than man.

The Lord is my strength and honor. / He is my savior.

The holy hand of the Lord lifted me up / His right hand has won.

Open the door of justice / Let me go in and praise the Lord.

This door belongs to the Lord: / The righteous enter through it.

I thank him. / Because he heard the prayer and saved me.

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

From the beginning and forever. Amen.
