4.1.4.2 Transmission of Life Is a Responsible Mission
Magisterium Southist Family Custom
of Pope John Paul II
Familiaris Consortio 31, 32 Solemn Reception by the Mother of the
Bridegroom (Ch. 3.7.9.1), (Ch.
3.7.9.1.1)
Most Solemn Blessing by the Mother of
the Bride (Ch. 3.7.9.3), (Ch. 3.7.9.3.2)
Song of Blessing (Ch. 3.7.9.3.1)
Pope John Paul II underlined the task of “transmitting life in a
responsible way”, and the problems that the spouses face in realizing this
31
32
task. Transmitting new life is a noble responsibility which reminds the
spouses not to have children as though by chance. Solemn Reception by the
Mother of the Bridegroom and the Most Solemn Blessing by the Mother of
the Bride imply the teaching of “responsible parenthood” found in Humanae
Vitae 10. According to this ceremony the spouses have a responsibility to
prepare themselves to receive this gift of life and to grow this gift to an
authentic person. For that, they are purified by the water and sanctified by
the sign of the cross and are given the blessings of prosperity and
33
posterity.
